Su particular característica fue su voz de barítono y su presencia escénica "oscura" arraigado en sus canciones de temática envuelto en la tristeza, sufrimiento, redención y sobre los conflictos morales del ser humano. Detrás de esa "persona" oscura (de joven, y durante su madurez, era una "pieza", controvertido y de fuerte personalidad...dejamos esto aparte) vivía un hombre profundamente espiritual, y con la edad aún más buscando consuelo en lo religioso. Su música expresa íntimamente el "alma" de un hombre complejo con una presencia carismática y muchas veces abrumadora.
Inmensamente influyente impactó directamente sobre generaciones de músicos y sobre la cultura moderna. Considerado como uno de los músicos más influyentes del siglo XX, el "Rey de la música Country", era mucho más, meritorio de curiosidad, exploración y del esfuerzo para descubrir su música. Cosa que animo al lector joven.
